Giovanni Battista and his talented, and subsequently famous son Antonio closely collaborated in musical matters. He did, however, receive some instructions in playing the harpsichord. That danger is generally considered to have been, what he later describes as “strettezza di petto” (tightness of the chest), possibly a form of bronchial asthma. Antonio Vivaldi died ten months after arriving in Vienna and was buried in a simple grave on July 28, 1741. The once best-known musician in Europe remained unnoticed by the music world in Vienna. This is probably why he moved to Vienna in 1740 to seek support from Emperor Charles VI. His compositions appealed less and less to Venetian audiences. Around 1730 a change in musical taste began. As a very enterprising opera composer and director, he is said to have performed an estimated 90 operas in Venice and Mantua between 17. ![]() While employed at the orphanage, Vivaldi began composing operas. ![]() Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel also knew his works. Both as a composer and as a violin virtuoso, Vivaldi became a living legend and a "place of pilgrimage" for many musicians from all over Europe. He wrote most of his violin concertos and sonatas during this period. The orchestra soon achieved a reputation that was legendary for the time and attracted numerous travelers to Italy. At the "Ospedale della Pietà", an orphanage for girls affiliated with the church, Antonio Vivaldi was employed as an instrumental teacher and music director of a girls' orchestra. He was nicknamed "Il Prete Rosso" ("the red priest") because of his red hair color inherited from his father. After a short time, however, he gave up the exercise of the priesthood forever because of health problems. In 1703 Antonio Vivaldi was ordained a priest and then became chaplain at the church of Santa Maria della Pietà. The son showed his talent for music at an early age and is said to have represented his father in the orchestra when he was young. ![]() His father had a job as a violinist at St. Antonio (Lucio) Vivaldi was an important Baroque composer and violinist. ![]()
